About Open Space

Open Space is a public forum that encourages citizens, especially youth, to explore and engage with issues such as diversity and pluralism, gender, human rights, inclusion and sustainable development.

Based in Pune, Open Space has been a lively and vibrant public forum for the last five years and is now also active in Lucknow, Kolkata, Ranchi, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

IDEAS, ALTERNATIVES, ACTION
Open Space is:
*A convening space for debate, dialogue and clarity on contemporary social issues
*A creative space for expression and exploration
*A learning space that conducts trainings, workshops and seminars for students and citizens
*A forum and facilitator for youth and citizens' action, networking and campaigning
*A resource centre holding a library of books, journals and films on social issues.
Open Space aims to:
*Strengthen civil society by promoting an understanding of social justice and sustainable development
*Take the messages of social equity, inclusion, diversity and pluralism to a wide cross-section of the urban middle class
*Strengthen citizens' action for human rights, social justice, sustainable development and accountable governance
*Involve and include youth in particular, strengthening their capacity to institute social change.
Open Space adopts a cultural approach to much of its outreach work. We use various forms of communication – literature, cinema, theatre, music, publications and Internet – to reach out to citizens. We also use different outreach strategies and processes such as workshops, public lectures, seminars, trainings and festivals.
Capacity-building
Our capacity-building programmes seek to build perspectives, knowledge and skills in different areas. They focus on urban middle class youth and concerned citizens.
Our trainings are on diverse issues – from the right to information to digital filmmaking for social messaging; from HIV/AIDS, gender, sexuality and human rights to theatre and creative writing.
